The ritual

How to use your scrub.

The ritual takes about three minutes. It works best when you do not rush it.

Recommended ritual: 1–2 times per week

  1. A hand lifting a heaped bamboo scoop of whipped sugar scrub from an open jar, with the wooden lid resting beside it.

    Scoop

Take a generous amount onto damp skin, away from the direct stream of the shower.

  2. A hand massaging whipped sugar scrub along a forearm in slow circles, resting on travertine in warm side light.

    Massage

Massage gently using slow circular motions, working from the ankles upward.

  3. A fine stream of warm water rinsing scrub from a forearm, the last sugar dissolving and droplets catching the light.

    Rinse

Rinse with warm water and reveal soft, smooth-feeling skin. Pat dry — no need to scrub the towel.

A hand smoothing oil along a forearm after rinsing, resting on travertine with a palm shadow on the wall behind.

The ritual

Afterwards

Pat the skin dry rather than rubbing, and follow with a light body oil or cream while the skin is still a little warm. That is when it holds the most.

A few small things

  • Step out of the direct stream of the water before you begin — the scrub works better on damp skin than on running water.
  • Work upwards from the ankles. It is more comfortable, and it feels better.
  • Go gently around knees, elbows and anywhere the skin is thinner.
  • Leave a longer gap between rituals if your skin feels sensitive that week.
